To get the most out of parent-teacher conferences, go prepared. Take a list of the questions you want to ask as well as something on which to take notes. You have a lot to discuss in a short amount of time, so give your brain a break and write down what you want to remember. Here’s a list of questions you may want to ask. 

Classroom Questions

• What are your classroom rules and how are they enforced?
• How do you communicate student behavior with parents?
• How are students evaluated academically?
• What resources are available for students with special needs?
• How can I best stay in the loop with the classroom schedule and curriculum?

Child-Specific Questions

• Does my student seem motivated and comfortable in class? Do they participate?
• How does my student interact with peers?
• Is this similar to the way most students his/her age interact with each other?
• What strengths have you noticed?
• What challenges have you noticed?
• Can I tell you a few things about my child (strengths, likes, unique family circumstances)?
• How can I get updates on my child’s progress academically, socially, and behaviorally?
• What activities can we practice at home to reinforce academics or classroom routines?

Most importantly, don’t be afraid to ask questions. The teachers are there to help your student, not to judge your parenting skills or your knowledge of the educational system. If you have a concern, address it with patience and respect. You have the right to be involved in your child’s education.
